Avignon Suite

Avignon Suite was composed for solo piano by Ina Dykstra. It is in three movements. Here are the composer's notes from the published music, available at vistaheightsmusic.com. "My husband Jan and I had the amazing opportunity to be in the south of France during the summer of 2018. We took a riverboat cruise through many towns and villages, one of which was “Avignon”. When I returned, I was inspired to write this suite of pieces, and truly hope that you will enjoy playing these as much as I enjoyed writing them!

Composer and Pianist

Ina Dykstra image
 Ina Dykstra received her Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance at the University of Alberta, where she studied with Dr. Ernesto Lejano and Dr. Helmut Brauss.  She also went on to complete Graduate Degree courses in Art Song, Collaborative Piano, Chamber Music and Solo Performance. Ms. Dykstra  also holds a degree in Music Therapy from Capilano College in Vancouver and is a member of the College of Examiners for the Royal Conservatory of Music. She has worked with a wide variety of students of all ages and all abilities, from the very gifted to those with various special needs.

Ina has a deep commitment to furthering musical education, creativity, and artistry.  After a long and rewarding career in St. Albert, Alberta, she now lives in Victoria B.C. and has over 35 years of experience as a teacher, accompanist, performer, clinician, examiner, composer and adjudicator.

Composer and Pianist

Jan Randall image
 Classical, jazz, blues, and pop music  have all been part of Jan’s life since he began playing by ear at the age of three. He holds a degree in Theory and Composition from the University of Alberta and studied jazz at North Texas State University. His orchestral works have been performed by the Vancouver, Victoria and Edmonton Symphonies. In 1991 he was commissioned to compose the world's first ballet for figure skaters, A Midsummer Night’s Ice Dream. The world premiere was in Edmonton in July 1992, and in 1994 it was produced as a 90 minute television special starring Elizabeth Manley. In 1996 he composed and produced the music for the World's Figure Skating Championships followed by the 2001 Worlds Games which was broadcast live to 4 billion people.

With a thirty year career composing for broadcast, he has over 800 production titles with CBC, the NFB, the Discovery Channel and ACCESS. In 2010 Jan retired from film scoring to focus on concert music. His performance and theatre credits include Second City, the Banff World Television Festival, and  the  CBC Radio comedy series,  “The Irrelevant Show”.

What People Have Said About Jan Randall

Jan is an accomplished jazz improvisor in addition to his skills as a classically trained composer. Here he is playing his original jazz song "Lost in a Dream" with bassist Thom Golub. This was recorded April 22, 2010.

The RCM published version of Leafy Sea Dragon requires the following important correction.

Measure 20 should contain a G# on beat 3 under the fermata as shown on the left.
This gives it a dominant harmony at the end of the phrase.

Our publications do not require this correction.
